Building for the Future • Preserving the Past
The next chapter of the Lewis County Public Library and Archives is taking shape! Construction is underway to renovate and expand our longtime home at 15 Kyle Avenue, creating more room for reading, learning, preserving local history, and bringing our community together.
Our library building has served Lewis County since 1972. This project builds on that legacy, combining improvements to the existing building with an addition designed to meet our community’s needs for generations to come.
Visit Us During Construction
The library is open at our temporary location in the High Forest Meeting Room, on Smith Street, between Memorial Park and the War Memorial Building.
Temporary hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
We continue to offer a smaller collection of books and materials, public computers with internet access, copying, scanning, wireless printing, and microfilm access. Public Wi-Fi and FAX services are not available at the temporary location. Our online resources, including eBooks and audiobooks through Tennessee READS and Libby, remain available.

More Room for Our Community
The renovated and expanded library will offer:
- Dedicated children’s and teen spaces with room to read, discover, and explore.
- Flexible meeting and program spaces for library activities and community gatherings.
- Quiet study spaces for focused work, reading, and learning.
- Improved technology spaces and electrical infrastructure to support public computer use and changing technology needs.
- Improved spaces for archives and local history, supporting the preservation and use of Lewis County’s government and historical records.
- Accessibility improvements, including updated restrooms and additional parking near the entrance.
- Improved staff work areas and security, helping us care for our collections and serve our patrons.
A Familiar Building, a New Chapter
The addition carries forward details that make our original library distinctive. Decorative brickwork around doors and windows, transom windows, and coordinated rooflines connect the new spaces with the character of the 1972 building.
These thoughtful connections honor the library’s history while creating a welcoming home for its future. As construction progresses, we look forward to sharing photographs of the old and new coming together.
